Garden / Chahar Bagh CARPET
Representing one of the most iconic and poetic compositions in Persian weaving, the Garden or Chahar Bagh (“four-part garden”) carpet translates the idealized layout of a classical royal garden into an intricately ordered textile. Rooted in ancient Persian concepts of paradise, these designs present an aerial view of a garden divided by water channels into four harmonious sections—symbolizing balance, renewal, and cosmic order. Flowing canals, shaded trees, flowering plants, and garden pavilions together form a vision of nature carefully shaped by human design.
Our Garden Classic rug is a modern hand-knotted interpretation woven in the northern regions of Afghanistan by master artisans who preserve the weaving traditions and design language of historic Northwest Iranian workshops. While contemporary in execution, the rug remains deeply faithful to the classical Chahar Bagh aesthetic, translating its formal structure into a refined and livable composition.
The rug is crafted from high-mountain Ghazni wool, sourced from sheep raised at elevations above 1,000 meters. In these cooler, rugged environments, the fleece develops a naturally high lanolin content, giving the wool strength, resilience, and a gentle natural sheen. This quality wool has long been favored for fine Persian-style carpets, allowing colors to develop richness and depth while ensuring durability under everyday use and a graceful patina over time.
The design captures the spirit of early 18th-century Chahar Bagh carpets: a central watercourse with branching canals, garden islands populated by stylized trees, ponds inhabited by birds and fish, and rhythmic flower beds arranged along structured pathways. While historic palace carpets were often monumental in scale, this contemporary version refines the classical layout into a more versatile format suited to modern interiors—without sacrificing the symbolism or visual poetry of the original design.
Entirely hand-knotted using traditional symmetrical knotting techniques, the Garden Classic brings a sense of order, serenity, and timeless elegance to living rooms, dining spaces, studies, and entrance halls. It stands as a quiet echo of centuries of Persian garden imagery—reimagined through Afghan craftsmanship for today’s homes.
